India vs. Bangladesh: 1st Test- Day 5- Match Story

Rain delays play for the last time in the match.

Finally after 5 days of rain-interrupted Test match, between India and Bangladesh ended in an inevitable draw. Here we bring you Day 5 as it happened:

The hosts were bowled out in their first innings for just 256 in respond to India’s mammoth 462/6. The spin twins in Ravichandran Ashwin (5-87) and comeback man Harbhajan Singh (3-64) did it for India, it was opener Imrul Kayes 72(139) and wicket-keeper Litton Das 44(45) were the highest scorers for Bangladesh. Soumya Sarkar also played a good knock of 37(54). Speedster Varun Aaron also picked up a wicket that of Sarkar.

Players celebrate Hasan's dismissal.

After yet another rain delay, play started after Lunch was taken and Ashwin continued the 30th over of which he had bowled one delivery the previous day. All-rounder Shakib thought that it would be good to take the attack to spinners early on and not allow them to settle. He started aggressively straight away against Ashwin and played a risky drive over the covers to pick up a four on a relatively good delivery. Ashwin accepted it and motivated himself to bowl the same line, waiting for him to make a mistake. And the trick worked! Shakib attempted an aggressive cut on a good length ball, eventually edging it to keeper Saha who held on to it! Ashwin was rewarded! Shakib left the ground in disappointment! But, in the process he became the only player to score 2000 runs and to take 100 wickets in Bangladesh!

Harbhajan was looking more focused today and both Ashwin and him were bowling with a purpose, the pitch supported them too. The two left-handers brought a lot of confidence to Bhajji.
But, opener Kayes and Soumya Sarkar were also tough enough to deny them a wicket! The fifty partnership for the duo came up and the boundaries came occasionally.

Hard work pays off!

Spinner Harbhajan Singh, went past Wasim Akram, the Pakistan fast bowler to become the ninth most successful bowler in Test Hhstory with 415 scalps. Imrul Kayes was the victim. Singh turned one sharply to get the in form batsman stumped! Saha has been good behind the stumps.

Bowled!

Varun strikes! Playing a loose shot outside off stump, Soumya Sarkar was sent back to the hut after his not so impressive 37. Bangladesh was starting to feel the heat as their last batsman, Litton Das walked out.

Who would have expected this man to perform on Test debut and under such pressure? In a high pressure situation, debutant Das smacked the spinners and put away the bad balls from pacers easily. He made his way to 44 off 45 before falling to Ashwin who picked up his fourth! His innings enough to prove he is good enough at this level.

The spinner continued his onslaught to bowl Bangladesh for 256.

Skipper Kohli asked them to follow-on and contiunue. Bangladesh second innings score read 23/0 after 15 overs before the Day’s play was over! The match ended in a draw which was always going to be the result in this rain affected fixture! Well, India outplayed them in all departments, the match still belonged to both teams at the end of the day!

Virat Kohli and Mushfiqur Rahim shared the series trophy. Shikhar Dhawan was rightly adjudged the Man of the Match for his blistering innings of 173.
Though this series has ended, the One day series is yet toi come. Do join us for the 1st ODI on 18th June. Until then take care, hope you enjoyed.Cheers!
