Top 3 incidents of sledging

Sledging! It has been a part of the game since the Aussies first introduced it back in the day. Here we bring to you a collection of three most intense incidents of sledging.

3. Sohail initiates, Prasad terminates.

9th march, 1996 , it was back then in the 1996 World cup as the two arch-rivals India and Pakistan met each other at India’s M Chinnaswamy Stadium, Bangalore in an absolutely exciting encounter.

The match was undoubtedly an eventful one. WasimAkram , the captain pulled out of the game at the last minute and AamerSohail came in as the stand-in captain.

The match started as the Indian captain Mohammad Azharuddin , elected to bat first after winning the toss. India posted 287/8 ,navjotsidhu top scoring with 93 and ajayjadeja scoring a brisk 45 off 25 balls.

The Pakistan batsman scored heavily in the first ten overs which resulted in the local boy venkatesh Prasad being booed by the crowd. The incident took place when Sohail prompted some thing to Prasad after he dispatched him for a four. Sohail openly lampooned Prasad, pointing to the region with the bat as if to say, "Go, fetch that".

Sohail tried to repeat the slash off the next ball, though it was on off stump, and was comprehensively bowled. A charged-up Prasad gave him a send-off ("Go home, you f****** bastard")

Eventually India won the match by 39 runs and maintaining the winning streak against Pakistan in WCs. But this match will always be remembered for this incident that took place.

2. When Shane Warne lost his temper to Marlon Samuels

Since we are talking about sledging, this incident has to be included without a doubt.
We take you back when Aussie legend Shane Warne was involved in an ugly confrontation with West-Indian all-rounder Marlon Samuels in the Big Bash League.

It all started in the first innings of the game when the Melbourne Stars were batting. David Hussey and Brad Hodge were at the crease. When Hussey worked out a single on the leg-side, there were chances of a second run but Marlon Samuels, who was bowling, grabbed him to deny another run. Hussey was clearly upset with it and pointed towards the umpire to take action, but that did not catch the attention of the umpire and no action was taken.

Though in the second innings, Samuels got the answer from Warne.

Warne finished his second over with a dot to Samuels and immediately started criticizing Samuels for his behavior earlier and started the verbal tirade by grabbing Samuels’ shirt! The conversation was picked up by Fox Sports microphones.

The situation was further intensified when Warne fielded a drive by Samuels and flipped the ball straight at the West Indian from close range as he stood in his crease. In reply, Samuels threw his bat over Warne’s head!

The umpires immediately came in and settled it down.

1. The “McGrath-Sarwan banter”

It was the fourth test of the series in Antigua with hosts West Indies taking on the Aussies. This is what happened:

Ramnaresh Sarwan, the West Indian batsman, was crafting one of his finest knocks in his career, leading the Indies to the highest successful fourth innings run chase in Test history. With the score at 4-236 in pursuit of 417, Glenn McGrath, the Aussie legend started disturbing the 21-year old West Indian following some false actions. With a humiliating defeat on the cards, McGrath asked Sarwan condescendingly, "What does Brian Lara's d--k taste like?"

"I don't know, ask your wife," Sarwan replied. With McGrath's wife Jane very ill at the time, it was a sledge that backfired for the Australian great as he proceeded to hurl abuse back at Sarwan and pointed out to him with his finger in a threatening manner.
