Sri Lanka after 'Sanga' era

Few moments after Kumar Sangakkara’s emotional farewell speech, there would be a bunch of mixed emotions in the nation and the Sri Lankan team.Happy to see their hero retire at the peak of his career. A sense of pride to have witnessed and played with of the finest cricketers of all time but yes, there would’ve been an awkward feeling-The feeling of losing him from their team.

It was very hard to imagine Indian Cricket without the likes of Sachin,Sourav,Laxman and Dravid and I am sure that this feeling would also be the same for those who have been associated with Sri Lankan cricket-Imagining a team without Kumar-their Hero. The young Sri Lankan Test team led by Angelo Mathews would surely agree to what we are discussing. The Sri Lankam team is in a phase of transition after the retirements of the stalwart of the team.

But the retirement of Sangakkara has or would surely hit this relatively young and gritty team more because they have not only lost a classic batsman but a teammate who had lift the burden of the nation everytime he played and yes they also lost a river in the form of him who was perennial, the most precious resource indeed.

Coming back to cricketing terms, his retirement has indeed left the heart of every cricket fan sad but it has led to a very positive thing for the Sri Lankan team that is a rise of a new Hero.It can be Dinesh Chandimal who proved to be a match-winner with a great century against India in the first test.It can be Angelo Mathews a confident all-rounder and a growing leader. Not to forget the classy Lahiru Thirimanne and opener Upul Tharanga. they will carry the legacy on.

Yes,there won’t be anyone who would score those double centuries with such elegance, there won’t be anyone to construct those mammoth partnerships, Cricket and Sri Lanka will miss their hero! Kumar Sangakarra- Take a bow!

As I said the current status of the Sri Lankan team would surely be “A Film Without The Hero”.
